FLORES DEL CEMENTERIO / CEMETERY FLOWERS
Living in Ecuador, S.A., for several years, I was struck by the vitality of Ecuadorian cultural traditions. The images in this series, for example, reveal the simple yet profound reverence for one's ancestors displayed by rural Ecuatorianos living in the Andean highlands. Inhabitants here for countless generations have regularly visited their local cemeteries to pay respects to deceased loved ones with fresh flowers in hand, often arranged in discarded, makeshift containers. The results make for tableaus of haphazard beauty, while serving as metaphors for the implacable cycles of life, death, decay that for centuries have shaped their lives and histories.
